According to foreign media reports, in order to meet the technological innovation needs of the self-driving car industry, the British Knight Optical company provides a series of optical components suitable for automotive lidar.
Knight Optical's diamond-turned aspheric lenses are well-known in the automotive industry due to their reliability and high quality, giving the industry's lidar-based autonomous driving systems high accuracy. Single lens will cause optical distortion due to spherical aberration, which will cause image distortion, but aspheric lens will correct spherical aberration and avoid unevenness. Therefore, single-component lens can calibrate or focus highly scattered light and replace the multi-lens system. Especially for lidar-based equipment, this setup can provide higher quality signals, and is more economical and compact than a multi-lens setup.
Knight Optical only offers custom diamond-turned aspheric lenses made of a variety of near-infrared materials that can be used in lidar-driven self-driving car applications. Such materials include N-BK7 (or equivalent), sapphire, quartz, UV fused silica, and more.
Diamond-turned aspheric lenses are also commonly used in optical components such as missile guidance systems, night vision goggles, and other military instruments. For example, in night vision goggles, only one aspheric lens can be used to replace a multi-lens array, thereby reducing spherical distortion, weight, and cost.
