According to the Mining.com website, Nicole Meyer, a Ph.D. student at the University of Alberta's Diamond Exploration Research and Training Institute, discovered a new mineral in diamonds from a mine in South Africa.
Mel found that Gold Schmidt stone has unique mineral characteristics of mantle minerals. The minerals such as strontium, potassium and strontium have high content of rare earth elements, while other minerals of the mantle have high content of magnesium and iron. To commemorate the founder of modern geochemistry, Victor Moritz Goldschmidt, the mineral was named goldschmidtite. Previous attempts to name other minerals with Gold Schmidt have not been successful.
According to the study, due to the high content of strontium and potassium in this mineral, the formation process is unusual.
Meyer estimates that diamonds containing Goldschmitt stones are formed 170 kilometers deep on the surface of the Earth at temperatures up to 1200 °C.
According to Graham Pearson, a deputy instructor at Meyer's Ph.D., the discovery helped to explore the fluid processes deep in the roots of the continent during diamond formation.
